The question, “What is your specific purpose?” has caused great anxiety among many believers.
Don’t worry. The Bible is quite clear on the matter.
Purpose
BE THE RIGHT WOMAN FOR THE RIGHT MAN!
Ever feel like you don’t know what a godly man is looking for in a wife? Our Irresistible Godly Woman Checklist will give you clear insights so you can stop guessing and start preparing … while reaching your full potential as a single Christian woman.
For one, each believer has the same purpose. Believe it or not, it has nothing to do with each of us specifically. It has everything to do with God. Here are some insights that Scripture gives concerning our purpose:
The purpose of every believer is to glorify God. This would involve:
- Loving God with our entire beings (Matt 22:37);
- Loving others as Christ has loved us (John 13:34-35);
Under these two broad categories, (to name a few) we have:
- Obedience to God (John 14:15)
- Preaching the Gospel and making disciples of all nations (Matt. 28:16-20)
- Becoming more like Christ;
- Using our gifts and talents to work and serve others;
- Being a good steward of the earth;
For those who are wondering about calling, you can check out Romans 11:29; 1 Corinthians 1:2; Ephesians 1:18; Ephesians 4:1,4; 2 Thessalonians 1:11, 2 Timothy 1:9; Hebrews 3:1 and 2 Peter 1:10. It is basically about our calling as believers.
If our basic purpose is to glorify God, then how would that look like in your life?
Surrender is key!
God may lead you to a specific line of work for your entire life or you may glorify Him in different capacities throughout your life. The key is to have a posture of total surrender to God. I know surrender is easier said than done because somewhere, deep in our minds and hearts, we believe that God is not that good.
“I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” Romans 12:1-2
The primary way to disable that lie is to renew your mind by consistently reading through the Bible. Then, you will see that God is extremely good and kind when we humans do not deserve it.
Also, if you believe that God is leading you to a particular path, it does not mean that life would be easy because you are being led by God.
So what should you be doing with your life right now?
Here are 6 questions to help you:
1. How has God uniquely gifted you?
God has given you natural and spiritual gifts. As you mature, you might discover new gifts from God. Personally, I think it is very exciting that all of us have several gifts, so there’s no need to be bored and get stuck when we encounter obstacles.
- Has God blessed you with a lovely singing voice?
- Are you a natural communicator?
- Do you have an athletic bent?
- Are you creative?
2. What passions do you have that align with the character of God?
I’m certain that you are passionate about several things – politics, the environment, music, running, human trafficking, at-risk youth, leadership development, customer service, etc.
God has given each of us several passions and they might change as the years roll by. What are your current passions and how is God leading you right now to serve in one of those areas?
3. Which door is currently opened to you?
If you’re a school teacher right now and you have no desire to travel out of space, I highly doubt that God is leading you to be an astronaut! There is no need to overthink this. Serve where are you now or move to where God has opened a door for you. Has a new position opened up for you? Do you have an opportunity to go to another country? Have you been offered a job at another organization?
Please take into consideration:
- The season of life that you’re in;
- God’s peace; and
- Say ‘yes’ to opportunities that align to biblical values.
Stepping in faith and not getting stuck in your comfort zone.
If you stay in your comfort zone, you will limit yourself to experiencing the mighty hand of God. Experiencing God keeps our walk vibrant and keeps our eyes on Jesus. We all need current testimonies!
4. What are your life experiences to date?
Life in your twenties will be different from life in your forties because your skills, knowledge, training, and exposure would have increased. Life experiences will bear on who you are and what you might be doing right now.
5. What talents have you developed through the years?
Usually, a passion leads to expertise after disciplined effort, training and practice. For instance, John Maxwell was interested in leadership so his growth path entailed reading on leadership for 1 hour a day. He’s now a talented leadership guru. Jerry Seinfield wrote one joke a day. He’s now an internationally acclaimed comedian. What have you done repeatedly for years and have become a professional?
6. Which season of life are you in?
The activities of a single woman are different from the activities of a married woman which are different from those of a married woman with children.
- Are you in a season of studying?
- Do you have young dependents?
- Do you have elderly parents?
- Do you have the primary responsibility to care for an ailing person?
- Are you having health challenges?
Soberly determine what you should do based on your present season of life. Try not to compare yourself with others.
Summary
Be open and flexible
Always be open to change. Some months ago, I heard about an expert tailor who committed suicide because an ailment prevented him from using his hands to sew. To me, that is extremely sad. His identity was confined to his profession. I am 100% certain that God blessed him with other gifts! He could have even become a tailor coach. (Have you ever noticed that most track & field athletic coaches look like they can’t even jog 100 metres and they are responsible for churning out star athletes?!😂)
You are so much more than your profession. Don’t get stuck! If being a doctor, your lifelong dream, doesn’t work out, tap into your other gifts or talents. Remember, it’s all about God and there are countless ways to glorify God on this earth. Right now, do what you believe that God has placed in your path to do. When there is time for change, God will nudge you in the next direction. Trust in Him to guide your life. Wasting your time worrying about your purpose is not a good option.:)
Remember that God is central to our lives and not that we are central to God’s existence. Don’t get down over your purpose and calling! Surrender to God and allow Him to lead your life with whatever twists and turns He sees fit. With God, your life will never be boring!
